Mental cruelty of a medico-legal victim in South Africa

SOUTH AFRICAN MEDICO-LEGAL CORRUPTION
A VICTIM’S 13 YEARS’ TORTURE FOR TRUTH
Botched surgery, resulting in a broken mouth and permanent pain, obliges me to blow the whistle on the Medical Protection Society and Medical Defense Union -based in London - which funds the South African medico-legal fraternity with power to fight medical malpractice victims to finality.
Government Departments – including the Human Rights Commission – WILL NOT INVESTIGATE ALLEGATIONS OF, INTER ALIA, INTIMIDATION OF WITNESSES, MENTAL CRUELTY, HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSE, AND AN UNFAIR TRIAL. Knocks at the doors of parliament – whose obligation is to protect its citizens – fall on deaf ears: Constitutional prescriptions of transparency and accountability should bind us all. A Judge recently emphasised “a ‘Pressing Need’ for the Public to know The Truth”!
ROHAN BARRY ISAACS, Dr. Rumbak’s lawyer, acting in conflict with the duties of an attorney, plotted to crack me mentally by threats, and compelling me into humiliating psychiatric evaluation by Dr. D. Shevel, who was paid by Isaacs for a report TO TWIST TRUTH, explaining away Dr. Rumbak’s negligence as “a pre-existing condition in my imagination”. I am told: “this is his job”! Isaacs threatened World-on-line, after which my website was sabotaged. My new website: www.raymondchait.co.za has been “suppressed pending clarification its legal status”! (sic)
Isaacs threatened my chief witness, who then refused to testify. She was course co-ordinator at the college where I lectured. Her report states that she observed my mouth swell grotesquely after Dr. Rumbak’s surgery, and that she would back my efforts to be indemnified for a ruined lecturing career. An Intimidation Investigation is imperative!
Isaacs agreed, later: “God forbid” he should be left crippled after mouth surgery.
PETER SOLLER, my lawyer, purposely spoilt my case. He was struck off the attorneys’ roll by 2 Judges, who warn that “Soller is a danger to his clients”.
Death Threats I received, are signed Peter Soller et al (and others).

· Dr. J.M. RUMBAK HAS A NEGLIGENCE HISTORY.
· District Surgeon’s Report validates permanent nerve damage, cracking jaw-joints, and muscle spasms, following Dr. Rumbak’s botched surgery. I eat in pain, and I speak in discomfort. Dr. Rumbak botched my Trigeminal Nerve.
· Dr. S. LEVY - to protect Dr. Rumbak - tried to omit “nerve damage” from his Cat-scan report, which appears as a written addendum!
· Dr. M. Denny’s Report points to Cartilage Disruption in the jaws.
· Dr. E. Shevel’s EMG (electro-myograph) Report points to low muscle activity in the jaws.
In CHAIT vs RUMBAK, JOHANNESBURG HIGH COURT - 10 NOVEMBER 1998 - CASE NO. 97/020452, there were procedural failures: Judge Claassens - ruthless with a burnt-vagina medical negligence victim - was friendly with Dr. Rumbak’s legal team. Judge Claassens refused my request to demonstrate to the court that I cannot chew, he would not allow me to refer to details of 3 other victims of Dr. Rumbak’s negligence (in one instance, motivated by adv. Brian Spilg, Dr. Rumbak volunteered to foot costs), Judge Claassens overlooked Dr. Rumbak’s council’s “leading question”, and he shouted at me.
Duty of Disclosure, in the Public Interest, and a pressing need for The Truth, necessitates focusing on Dr. Rumbak’s previous victims’ botch-ups, so that people be forewarned.
The archaic health professions’ council found Dr. Rumbak “blameless”, without giving me a hearing. Their elderly chairman, Dr. Dreyer, tried to comfort me by referring to his own pain!
The Department of Health MEC informed me that his department has no control over doctors in private practice: these doctors cannot be disciplined, even when there is a history of medical negligence!
The medico-legal network incorporates the law society’s disciplinary committee: Mr. du Plessis protected my lawyer - Soller - at 5 bogus investigations, and he threatened “to have me removed, if I did not fall silent”. I fix full blame on the weak, hesitating, and accommodating law society for allowing “more than 172 law firms to defraud poor road accident victims of compensation (The Star 10 July 2001).
A social worker, fingering my sanity, was delegated to commit me to Valkenberg Mental Hospital for evaluation. An advocate, liaising with the social worker, said “this would strengthen my case”!!
Failing that, this social worker commissioned Dr. G. Winkler to stump me: he requested Dr. Shevel’s report, which points to “a pre-existing condition in my imagination”. Dr. Winkler offered to make my case as strong as possible. He wanted me to concede to an application for a government disability grant, on the grounds of a “delusional disorder”. Dr. Winkler prescribed Haloperidol and Benzhexol - psychotic drugs - which induce stiffness, shaking and sudden death: a gambit nothing less than sanctioned murder.
I must vindicate my sanity, my integrity, and my dignity, by sententiously exposing human rights abuse, mental cruelty, character-assassination, and the murderous tactics employed by the medico-legal fraternity, when a victim speaks out in the Name of Truth: SLOTTING MY BROKEN MOUTH CAUSED BY DR. RUMBAK, WHO HAS A NEGLIGENCE HISTORY, INTO A MENTAL ABERRATION.
My Right to Truth, Justice, and Human Rights has been stolen. My ability to speak and eat normally, as well as my 21-year lecturing career and quality of life, have been stolen.
“You take my life, when you do take the means whereby I live” (Shakespeare).
Whether the Medical Protection Society / Medical Defense Union – insurers for medical negligence – enforce their obligation to advise Dr. Rumbak to take responsibility for ruining my life, whether Glenrand MIB – insurers for Soller’s professional negligence – honour their obligations, whether Attorneys’ Fidelity Fund assumes accountability for Soller’s Trust Funds abuse, is no longer a criterion: I have survived as a tortured indigent for 13 years.
However, if I abort this Battle, I Betray The Truth I Taught, and I bow out a ridiculous fool, successfully vanquished by the medico-legal fraternity’s right of eminent domain, where the men with the gold lay down the rules.
“Laws grind the poor: rich men rule the law!” (Oliver Goldsmith).
“Right & Good does not win in court: the strong man wins!” (Bernard Melamed).
“The poor man is the rich man’s dog!” (Afrikaans: “Die arm man is die ryk man se hond!).
What a disgrace!
A Judge insists that the 11th commandment should read: “Do not be the silent bystander.”
Interested parties can forward my grievances and/or reach me anytime, for updates and further details.

RESEARCH TO CRACK SOUTH AFRICAN MEDICO-LEGAL MALPRACTICE CONSPIRACY-OF-SILENCE, IN THE NAME OF TRUTH
We come into this world with nothing, and we leave with nothing:
My faith commands me, by the prescription of “TIKKUN OLAM” - “HEALING OF THE WORLD” - to make a difference during my sojourn on this planet, by leaving behind more than just footprints in the sand… an improved, and better place, than what I found.
The moral of The Biblical Talents kicks in! We must strive to add to the manifold beauty of the world! God does not expect us to complete our assigned task, but we may neither renege, nor relent.
My faith compels me to acknowledge the sentiments of The Great Leveller/The Great Equaliser (in Afrikaans: Die Groot Ewenaar): the Hebrew Law prescribes an obligatory Plain Pine Coffin for every Jew, rich or poor, when we move on to The House of Eternity, and into The World of Truth.
There is no such thing as “buying time”:
In the poem, “The Sands of Time”, our daily hour-glass quota has a balance of 86 400 seconds, which is written off at each day’s end, for king and pauper alike! Like ships in the rising ocean, mind, body, and soul, should be fed and synchronized every day, using time wisely. Nurturing our souls, prepares us for old age! We realise, only too late, that our greatest assets are 1. Time and 2. Health, both irreplaceable, once they slide.
The Smiling Clock: Have you ever looked at advertisements for analogue watches? The advert’s face shows 10 past 10 (10h10 or 22h10) or 10 to 2 (13h50 or 01h50). Advertisers want watches to advertise smiling faces, the hands of the clock portraying a smiling mouth… the smile on your dial! And yet, we see so many sad faces around. God does not want us to be sad, because we are all part of God! Therefore, I advise sad people to take cognisance of the poem, “A Smile at Xmas”: “… nobody needs a smile more than those who have none to give”.
A religious leader got a clock as a gift, with a brass plaque: “a mOmento of your visit”. He said that I was dangerously-pedantic, when I pointed out to him that the plaque should read: “mEmento” (ie. a keep-sake gift!). I suppose they mixed up the memento at the wrong moment, oh!
I played the piano-accompaniment of “Morning has broken”, and the pupils sang “God’s RECREATION (as in pastime or hobby) of the new day” instead of “God’s RE-CREATION of the new day”, because of previous wrong teaching becoming their entrenched behaviour! It was almost impossible to convince them to follow the CORRECT pronunciation!!
God and Truth:
Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twersky emphasises that God and Truth are identities… an inseparable Siamese Twin. He notes that Teaching Truth is the Highest Calling: Waitress Vicky says, so brilliantly: “everybody passes through the hands of a teacher”!
In Iran, the execution of a murderer was halted, because his flute-playing reduced the victim’s family to tears. His angelic music saved his life, and he was made to pay a blood-money fine instead (Cape Times 19 July 2007). Two other legs that support God’s Ubiquitous Table, are Love and Music - Music being The Highest Truth, because no ear can dispute a false note!
Carnal Pleasures:
The heavy weight of material possessions, and that lust “to have more”, prevents us moving into the ethereal and idyllic spiritual realm…In Ethics of The Fathers, we learn: “the more possessions we have, the more problems we have”. From an Economics perspective, every product has built-in obsolescence ie. every possession we have, will break down. Mother Teresa died, leaving behind 2 Sari’s, and a Bucket, and a wealth-legacy of Love for The World! Jesus, The Great Teacher, is an optimum example of palpable humility: He rode on a donkey, wearing old sandals, and he washed people’s feet! Jesus wanted to share The Greatest Asset: WISDOM! No-one can ever take your micro-chip of wisdom away from you. Get Solomonic Wisdom, above all else, during your short sojourn on this planet! Madonna sings of “A Material World”, where possessions “place us” in society. Barry Ronge refers to these as “positional goods”! Rudyard Kipling, in his Poem, “If” teaches his son “… if you can walk with kings, but never lose the common touch”!
Perhaps, alluding to a person with “The Golden Heart”, conjures up a ring of Truth in “The Emperor’s New Clothes”. The good person wears an invisible gold ring around his heart. When that final curtain comes down, of what value in any event, is my gold ring, and any other ostentatious carnal trapping, when I am readying myself to move into a Spiritual Realm? Years ago, when I taught at a Johannesburg College, I was covered by a good medical aid. My dentist at that time, fitted a gold filling, and advised me of this afterwards! I often joked that my corpse would have value, until recently, the filling came out! I have given it to a special friend in the Swartland, and I have insisted that this serendipitous gift to her, was a directive from my heart, and I will be pleased when she makes it into an eternal friendship ring from me! This lady is palpable proof that those who have little, actually give most: she gave to me unstintingly over the years. The rich give of their wealth… the poor give of their soul! Kahlil Gibran also adds that we must give whilst we are still alive, that the pleasure of giving be ours, because in the end, we surrender all our possessions. South African billionaire cosmonaut, Mark Shuttleworth, told the press recently that, besides electing never to marry nor have kids, he would like to plan his life so that on his demise, all his wealth will have been used up!! My conscience forbids me to wear a gold ring, knowing there are so many without a crumb to eat!
Theory of Truth versus the real-world scenario:
The Classroom Truth I taught for 21 years, is not a marketable tool in our ruthless, dog-eat-dog world, which makes a mockery of Didactic Principles. Success, today, is measured, WRONGLY, by how fast a person can accumulate wealth! The right thing for me to do, is to make a paradigm shift, even if it means holding a humble candle to light up a dark room. I sit with a broken mouth, after botched surgery by a doctor who has a negligence history. I am told that his boo-boo’s are called “finger-mistakes”!
When doctors maim their patients in America or in Britain, they are held accountable, and Punitive Damages are awarded to victims, but this is not the case in South Africa! My question: WHY IS SOUTH AFRICA SO BACKWARDLY-DIFFERENT?
Some people have said that the doctor deserves to be shot… I say, NO!
Some people have said that if they had to chew and speak in permanent discomfort, they would commit suicide… I say, NO!
(Shakespeare: King Henry VI Part 2): “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers”… I say, NO! BUT force them to FACE TRUTH!
I taught that in Insurance, with damage, the “3-R’S” - Repair, Repay, Replace are implemented, to reinstate the person to the position s/he was in before the damage. In the empirical situation, a gang of professionals is appointed, and paid handsomely, to twist Truth (ie. TO LIE), and to explain away the damage caused by the negligent doctor, as “a pre-existing condition”, adding if necessary, that this is “a figment of one’s imagination”. The principles of “restitutio in integrum” (Latin for: “putting the person into the position s/he was in, before the damage”) are committed to the trash can. I am told that “these professionals are JUST DOING THEIR JOB!!” - making the law work for them, and sharing the loot gained from the victim’s permanent pain!
Humiliation is another tactic used to quieten the damaged patient. The doctor, who will network with other doctors and lawyers, victimises the victim, and terrorises him, by threats of compelling him/her by court orders to be subjected to psychiatric evaluation. This fingering of his sanity, and hence his credibility, is mental cruelty, character assassination, and human rights abuse. I find this subversive behaviour reprehensible, and disgusting, to its very core! Lawyers (notice how close-sounding to “LIARS”) are taught the art of twisting Truth eg. To protect a doctor, lawyers will try to convince that physical damage caused by their client, who is a negligent doctor, is actually a mental aberration!!!
Harmful drugs, with horrific side-effects, will be prescribed to induce further set-backs.
Kahlil Gibran teaches us that Death is stronger than Life, but Truth is stronger than Death.
Moving further along their dispicable tracks of “above the law” entrenched behaviour, the doctor’s lawyers then have no compunction about intimidating the victim’s witnesses. My chief witness issued a report stating that she observed my face swell grotesquely after botched mouth surgery, and that she would back my efforts to be indemnified for a ruined lecturing-career. The doctor’s lawyer visited her, and she decided not to be my witness, her pretext being that “her brother-in-law works for the doctor’s lawyers”!
The doctor’s lawyer assured this chief witness that the court case against his client, would be a “walk-over victory” in his favour, all because money from unlimited sources, including his insurers based in London, is made available to ridicule the victim. My maimed condition makes me a resented outcast - a broken spoke in society’s wheel.
This is a paragon example of win-at-all-costs competition, where the horse Clem Sunter speaks about, is cut up. This is all part of the selfish “inward-spiral” - instead of co-operative Gestalt synergism (1 + 1 = 3 !!), with everyone riding the horse… the resultant benefits of recognising Truth, would positively ripple and spin-off…This would all be part of the “outward spiral”! Greed’s head is very ugly. I refer to it as the “Rawsonville syndrome”: During a rugby match at Rawsonville recently, a player broke the neck of one of the opposing team-players, causing his death, for the sake of winning.
The damage that we inflict on each other, conjures up 3 more examples:
Serial murderer “Dr” Harold Shipman gave 150 elderly ladies, medication to WORSEN their respective illnesses. After conviction, he hanged himself in his cell!
A primary school teacher sent an 11-year old boy out of her classroom, because of a prank. He was nowhere to be found… except much later, a hanging corpse in his parents’ garage!
A language teacher at a college where I taught, told a matric student that he was useless, and he would achieve nothing in life. He kicked in lockers during the break, and the headmaster wanted to expel him. This student was just giving vent to gross humiliation he had been subjected to, in the presence of his friends, which had pre-empted his behaviour.
Yes, I stand for the underdog, and I use these examples to portray human evil.
How much damage will a South African doctor be allowed, while he continues to pay his lawyers, to cover his botch-ups?
Examples of how laws of logic are defied:
The chairman of the old medical and dental council tried to comfort me, by referring to his own pain. My retort was that, with all due respect, his pains were the pains of old age.
The head of the law society disciplinary committee threatened to have me removed, when I insisted on stating my case against my rogue lawyer, who was protected at 5 bogus investigations, until two judges finally struck him off the attorneys’ roll, stating that he is “a danger to the public”!
During the court case, I referred to five doctors, who forced open the Steve Biko case. The doctor’s advocate, who was allowed the following “leading question” by the presiding judge, badgered me as follows: “so you trying to tell the court there are only five straight doctors in South Africa, all the rest are crooks?” My rejoinder: “you said that advocate, and let it be placed on record.”
Positive versus negative:
I did not ask to be maimed after oral surgery, but I will use this as a positive lesson to share my experiences with others, so that they are not tortured for Truth for 13 years, which is my lot! I have been the sacrifice, but in doing so, I will take care that no-one else in South Africa suffers the type of ridicule to which I have been subjected for 13 years!
In life, we get what we need, which is sometimes much more than what we want! Is this being blessed with a burden, or being burdened with a blessing? God chooses you, because you are strong enough to bear the pain.
Mzwakhe Mbuli: “God does not give you a task, without providing the tools”.
It could have been worse:
I say to the doctor who has broken my mouth: “you take my life, when you do take the means whereby I live” (Shakespeare: The Merchant of Venice).
For anyone to identify with my pain, no commiseration is required, but rather stand for a while in my painful shoes. Our mouths are our communication-windows with the world. The Bible tells us that “by the sweat of our brows, we shall earn our bread”. The Bible does not hasten to add that we will eat in pain, and speak in discomfort, after being maimed by a doctor. I say: to experience my burden, walk one mile in my moccasins! My jaws crack painfully, bone on bone!
My broken mouth, as a lecturer, is my broken tool-of-the-trade.
“The injustice done to an individual, is sometimes of service to the public” (Junius). Dr. Coue encouraged his patients: “Every day, in every way, I get better and better”! A person’s mind can either break him, or give him power enough to move mountains: if I can conceive it, and if I can believe it, I can achieve it! The healing takes place by moving from the material to the spiritual realm: hollowing out, and cleaning out the clutter. Those that travelled through the desert, made it to their destination, by unloading the excess baggage!
C.S. Lewis, in Shadowlands, reminds us that “pain is God’s megaphone to arouse a deaf world”. What does not break us, makes us stronger.
I am humbled by a woman who told me that after mouth-surgery, her favourite food, oxtail, tastes like wood. She has no sense of taste, because a doctor severed the nerve that controls her taste-buds!
We then say, “there, by the Grace of God, go we!”
And I cannot help alluding to this aphorism: “I complained that I did not have new shoes, until I met someone who had no feet!”
Examples portraying the right of eminent domain:
Laws grind the poor, and rich men rule the law (Oliver Goldsmith).
In “The People” (Bernard Melamud), a son asks his father if The Good and Right wins in court. The father replies: “My son, the strong wins”.
The men with the gold make the rules.
In Afrikaans: “Die arm man is die ryk man se hond”. (“The poor man is the rich man’s dog”).
Coping Mechanisms:
Being poor, you move to a spiritual milieu, by necessity:
Professor Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity kicks in… the month cannot stretch the limited finances… it becomes a long and angst-filled month… there’s more month than money. The pain, together with one’s indigent financial condition, is a constant reminder to egg one on, in a sententious way, forcing out Truth. Like the man in the advert, who loosens his tie to dive off the ledge of the roof of a high-rise building, one must follow through. There is no turning back, when one is past the point of no-return, in a Crusade for Truth. One presses on, without any fear - one is BEYOND FEAR, and one offers oneself unconditionally IN THE NAME OF TRUTH. Tolstoy teaches us: “The Hero of my tale is, was, and will be…. TRUTH”!
I will never forget a restaurant manager remarking that I was wearing my “Checkers Jacket” - what he implied, is that it’s a cheap jacket, even though it WAS checked! This is all part of unconditional relenting on possessions. In South Africa, we speak of “Ubuntu”: “I am a person because of other people”. John Donne has taught us that when the bell tolls for another person, I, too, become diminished! Our Cosmic Love feeds us! Whatever we do, should be done with love. Those who crushed the grapes with a bad or sad heart, instilled a bitterness into the grapes, which became vinegar! Making food… teaching… working… must be done In The Name of Love!
And here I am, 13 years later, still busy “getting my ducks in a row”… and once they’re in a row, I get asked facetiously: “but now, will they fire?”
They will fire… bullets of Truth… that is why I am a teacher… I have built-in mechanisms of resilience, tenacity and patience. I know - only too well - that one must never give up! Let no-one confuse you, or deter you, once you set out to reach your life’s goal: there are some who will say: “yes, go for it!”, others will say: “maybe!”, others will say “don’t do it!
Things happen when God merits it Right! A person must never question God’s Ways!
There are 5 types of people in this world: 4 are reactive: the 4 lying “w’s”: the waiters, the watchers, the wanderers, and the wonderers. Those that make things happen proactively invert the “w” to an “m” and motivate changes in the world…
At the university where I was enrolled as a student for a Masters Degree in Commerce – I have completed a draft Research Proposal in a specialised area of motivation – the Dean of the faculty asked me if I am “out of it”? My thirst for Truth, as an on-going student, means that “I will be out of it” only when I take my last breath, and after my heart beats its last. At present, my music takes precedence, and shouts its Truth, as I work on challenging piano arrangements of, inter alia, Richard Addinsell’s Warsaw Concerto, and Johnny Pearson’s Sleepy Shores… the show goes on… I will keep on practising until I am worthy to play for The Angels…
The Human Rights Commission, even on appeal, refuses to investigate my allegations of South African medico-legal corruption, their pretext being that I “lost my case”. I insist that I lost my case because of a unfair trial. They refuse to listen!
People generally are frightened off by those who stand for radical Truths, and like a school principal has told me, they move into accepted circles, because “doss pussed nischt” (Yiddish: “it is not acceptable” to be different)… and yet my religion forces me never to step down, but to take a continued stand for what is Right, for Truth, for Human Rights, and for Justice… to BE different, otherwise, if I follow the sheep, I go with them to the slaughter. I am not quite ready for that, therefore I remain controversial, and follow my solitary crusade, in order to break the conspiracy-of-silence, and crack into medico-legal corruption in South Africa. “The ultimate measure of a person, is not where they stand in moments of comfort and convenience, but where they stand in times of challenge and controversy” (Martin Luther King Jr.). My heart compels me. I follow the dictates of my heart to the last. My heart will never lead me astray.
I Am On God’s Orders! People said that South African Apartheid would never be cracked… and in 1994, Nelson Mandela did it, and He became The Hero… from Prisoner to President!
Cynical bystanders comment that I am busy saddling up a very big horse. I hasten to add: “and we will all take turns to ride it!”
“You can deprive me of my possessions, you can shed my blood, and burn my body, but you can never harm my spirit, nor touch my TRUTH!” (Kahlil Gibran)
God Bless You for taking the time to share my research.
I end, finally, by quoting My Hero, John Lennon: “Imagine no need for greed… people living in peace… and sharing all the world”.

Our Health
We must honour our bodies as temples.
The doctor who broke my mouth, asked twice if I have had any past operations. He was thrown when I related a history of health! He mentioned his high blood pressure. Immediately after he operated on me, my mouth swelled, the muscles went into bizarre spasm, together with deafening ear-ache, and climaxing with cracking jaw-joints. Today – 13 years later – the painful climaxing still occurs, which will plague me for the rest of my life. People normally associate “climaxing” with pleasure! Mine are all pain-riddled! My jaws are now dislocated, so I cannot open my mouth wide enough to yawn!
Interesting body facts (Sunday Times 29 July 2007): “We use 72 muscles to speak just one word… the strongest muscles in the human body are on either side of the mouth…” My mouth muscles are ruined. An electromyograph (EMG) validates “low muscle activity” in the area of the botched surgery.

Feeding evil… psychosomatic laws
I believe that money we make when evil is our partner, gathers momentum to destroy us…
“Evil” is “live” spelt backwards…
What lies in store for the man who boasts that if he breaks someone’s thumbs, this person can never again hold a cup?
If we maim fellow human beings, or bare malicious intentions, psychosomatic illness kicks in: high blood-pressure will worsen, anemia will evolve to leukemia, those who lance others with mental daggers, will experience the debilitating effects of “widow’s stoop”. Ralph Waldo Trine, “In Tune with the Infinite”, explains this phenomenon using a case-study: a woman breaks out in boils every time her mother-in-law visits, the boils being a physical manifestation of her hatred.
A lawyer responded to the Shakespearean quote re killing all lawyers, adding “one by one”. He submits that “you can never win against a doctor in South Africa!”
Another lawyer said I must not be upset if he does not call me… he has never called in 54 years. Why would he call now?

Our Bonus Years
The Bible teaches us that we live three score and ten years, then enter our “bonus years”. In Judaism, a boy becomes a man at thirteen, when he reads a portion of the law for the first time. If he lives to eighty-three, he reads a portion of the law for the second time. He has attained the age of thirteen again! He celebrates an induction into second manhood! (70 plus 13 giving 83!).
In Afrikaans, getting your second wind, is known as “tweede asem” - your “second breath”…I am honoured with a second chance – a rebirth: the close-to-death post-operative pain shook me with the reality of my mortal vulnerability.
In a prostrate position, I was railed into a tunnel – an incinerator-like contraption for a CAT-scan (an X-ray of the brain)!
It’s as though I have been born again. I survived being felled by The Grim Reaper’s sickle, after quivering at his door-step. The pain has subsided to a permanent discomfort of a continuously climaxing, cracking mouth, which occurs 24/7! ie. I am aware of these spasms, even as I sleep! Anomalously, I am 13 years into my bonus years, at age 54!

Symbols indicating that “we have arrived”
We swing bunches of keys on long ribbons as we parade through shopping centres, cell-phones plugged to the ears, or SMS on the move… that’s “cool”…
In the movie, “Premonition”, actress Sandra Bullock and her husband chat to each other on mobiles, while at the wheels of their “4 x 4” s! Some South Africans see the need to emulate this bad example: the maxim warns us: “Monkey see, monkey do!” Don’t always follow. You may also jump into the fire!
Barry Ronge tells us that when we have to listen to “cool, cool, cool” while people assault us with their personal baggage, they are dumping their private garbage in public places, and into our ears.
A clothing store asks potential customers: “Are you sure you have everything?” This advertising campaign exacerbates an insatiable appetite to want more… to have more… to own more…
We bite off big assets, and choke on the bones of debt…
A face puffed with pride, and a wallet puffed with R200 notes never fails to arrest attention. The red-carpet treatment pampers the lucky owner of that lucre… the craving to be noticed, to reduce loneliness, to obviate insecurity, has now paid dividends.
When I demonstrated outside parliament, I recognised the son of an affluent family, interviewing people for his MBA-assignment, with its focus on people with tenacity, persistence and perseverance. He asked me questions, then pulled out a R50 donation – a drop in his opulent ocean – and he tried to persuade me that I had “done enough” for human rights victims. My answer to him remains unchanged: I dare to be different… I dare to follow through, like the swing of a golf club, never surrendering the values and principles of RIGHT and TRUTH. You can never “do enough” to make the world into a better place, to make a difference, to open a road for others, so they are not rocked by the ridicule of greed!

Labels
Labels and designer-markings are materialistic aspirations.
But think! A person has an expensive “label” guitar, with built-in tuning devices, and electric pick-up facilities, but s/he flounders and cannot strum a chord correctly!
The analogy is an old and impotent man sitting next to a willing, nubile young woman… he, too, can’t “play”!!!
My passion for 21 years, was to teach, but now I sit with a mouth that does not “play”, as nature meant it to!

Time and Truth
Time is the critical criterion, in my fight for Truth… every day’s passing, is temporising, stalling, playing for time, delaying tactics, which counts in the negligent doctor’s favour, because his list of helpless victims are cast out further into time’s hazy, distant sea, which is churning on, ineluctably.
Also, every day’s passing, sees more of the people implicated, die: my rogue lawyer, who purposely spoilt my case, has succumbed to Death… yet Death can never absolve his guilt: the painter, Jeff, recently uttered words of wisdom, apt here: “God make, God take, God make no mistake!”
Like the hour glass, we are running out of time… 13 years of pain and discomfort while speaking and eating, is a very long torture! It is also a pricking reminder never to relent… never to renege…
Pianist Anna Bender, in her autobiography “Notes of Remembrance”, reminds us that “the late afternoon shadows are growing even longer”.
TRUTH lives on, like Oscar Wilde’s “Picture of Dorian Gray”, unchanged by the passage of time! Yet time will pass, so that TRUTH be known!

Full versus Empty
Professor P.J. Schoeman, “Van Jagter tot Diereliefhebber” alerts us that in every area of life, we have to be deprived in the present, to be rewarded in the future: desert thirst makes us appreciate and value water, a wade through mud is actually a cleansing experience, living on field roots for a while, makes us appreciate meat, yet you find so many who are content their entire lives, eating only the crumbs. Having pain, forces us to appreciate the alleviation of pain… the deeper the empty bucket, the more that it can contain later…
The electricity fails, and you sit in the dark for a while, collecting your thoughts… without coffee, without a cooked meal. By “The Angels’ Grace”, your friend lends you a gas-cooker, and you enjoy your steaming food and coffee, and you enter a candle-lit romantic evening.
Pessimists describe the cup as half-empty. Optimists view it as half-full…
They say ageing is not for the faint-hearted: ageing can only be positively enjoyed, as Igmar Bergman (Die Burger 6 August 2007) describes it: “A daunting mountain climb, making the ageing person breathe more heavily as he ascends, but the wondrous bonus, is the increasing beauty of the panoramic vistas” and the wisdom gained enables one to appreciate it all. Only age can endow us with this ability. Should we not then be grateful when our cups runneth over?
I suppose we should take it step by step… like cutting a large area of grass, using shears… doing it in stages. We will complete the job, and we then need not go to the gym!
Everything in life is relative: the paralysed man in the wheelchair asked his friend, who was shuffling past, “Why are you walking so fast?”

My religion, again!
A religious leader says my broken mouth is a private matter, and has nothing to do with my religion. I CHALLENGE HIS LOGIC: my broken mouth is a grave public concern, because any innocent patient can become the same doctor’s next victimised victim, bearing in mind his negligence history. The status quo in South Africa is that victims of medico-legal malpractice, currently become outcasts of society! Also, my onerous crusade has everything to do with my religion, because my religion is based on The Truth, which has been denied me for 13 years! Remember, Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twersky teaches us that God and Truth are inseparable twins!

The Humiliating Sword of Damocles
Imagine selling old clothes on street corners… using old towels with frayed edges… wearing old clothes… sucking bones, just for the sensation of meat… using the barest of toiletries… using filthy public ‘phones.
(Die Burger 25 July 2007) describes this desperation succinctly… I, too, am “plain gatvol”. That’s the frustration that I feel!

Khaled Hasseini in “The Kite Runner” explains theft as the only sin… every other sin is a variation of theft… when you tell me a lie, you steal my right to The Truth. Using this logic, my ability to eat and speak, has been “stolen” from me by the doctor who has broken my mouth! My career and quality of life have also been stolen.

My temple has been vandalised!
Where does responsibility and accountability kick in, with these professionals?
Do we allow them to prey on?

My commitment to RIGHT, HUMAN RIGHTS, JUSTICE, and TRUTH, remains unfazed. I may never complete this assigned task, but I will never renege, nor relent.
One person can make a difference, even against insurmountable odds!
Let’s wait!
